Richard, the studio manager, with Kristin and Bret

The opportunity to apprentice and make their own artwork at Johnston Studios has been a rewarding and exciting experience for both Bret and Kristin. From the beginning of a project to the end, they have enjoyed being a part of the ancient process of lost-wax bronze casting. Their hard work and aim for quality artwork reveals itself not only in their contributions as students to Mr. Johnston, but also in their own sculptures.

A bronze foundry can be a dirty, loud, hot and challenging environment which is best appreciated with persistence and a sense of humor. It is a long process from original sculpture to finished bronze piece, requiring much patience and at times very detailed work to complete. In this increasingly fast-paced world, the value in such effort, time and attention is significant.

Bret’s skill in metalworking includes not only bronze casting, but also work with brass, copper and glass.  In addition to welding, chasing and casting skills he has experience making both ceramic and rubber molds for a variety of works.   He is equally talented making jewelry as well as larger installations. His assiduous and resolute nature is truly invaluable in a metalworking studio.  “I have a deep respect and curiosity with the potentially lethal liquids that are bronze and glass.  The intensity and immediacy of these elements create an acute awareness and presentness in the moment of creation.”-Bret

With an aptness for drawing, Kristin naturally brings her meticulousness and appreciation of form to both clay and metal sculpture. Though she can be very particular, she is also adaptable and enjoys the unpredictable qualities of the creative process.
